Centennial Park Baptist Church

Centennial Park Baptist Church, of the Canadian Baptists of Ontario and Quebec, calls itself an active, people-oriented, Bible-believing church. Its statement of beliefs affirms one God in three equal persons, the divine inspiration of the Scriptures, justification by faith alone in the righteousness of Christ and the perseverance of the saints. It baptizes believers by immersion, observes the Lord's Supper, and sums up its purpose as to know Christ, to show Christ and to serve Christ.

Centennial Park Baptist Church stands on Kennedy Road in the Nelles Estates area of Grimsby. The congregation was organized in December 1876 as the Grimsby Baptist Church. It met at first in a Bible hall on Adelaide Street that had been built for a Sunday school, and from 1881 in an orange-brick church at the corner of Elm and Mountain Streets.

In 1967 the church decided to move and sold that building. It worshipped for a year in Trinity United Church while a new church was built on a two-acre former orchard on Kennedy Road; it was dedicated on Thanksgiving Sunday, 13 October 1968. The congregation took the name Centennial Park for its nearness to the park opened in Canada’s centennial year. The building was renovated and expanded in 1994.

The church belongs to the Niagara-Hamilton Association of Baptist Churches, which is affiliated with the Canadian Baptists of Ontario and Quebec, and its pastor is Chris Stefanidis. Worship is at half past ten on Sunday morning, after a time of prayer at half past nine, and is streamed on YouTube.

What to expect

Sunday worship runs from 10:30 to about 11:30 a.m., after a time of prayer at 9:30. Kidz' Church, for children from age five to Grade 6, takes place during the service, with children dismissed partway through, and parents are always welcome to keep their children with them. Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of each month, when Kidz' Church does not run. On the second Sunday members and guests are invited to a free lunch after the service in Woolverton Hall. A nursery and toddler room are available, and childcare can be arranged by asking in advance.
