St. John's Presbyterian Church

St. John's is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in Canada whose mission is 'to know Christ and share his good news with all people'. As Presbyterians its members hold to the priesthood of all believers, in which each one has something to contribute to the life and work of the church. Its Sunday messages aim to be Christ-centred, unpacking 'the ancient mysteries of faith in our present context', and it baptizes both children and adults.

Since June 2024 St. John’s Presbyterian Church has been based in the Trinity United Church building at 100 Main Street West, where it now worships in Memory Hall and keeps its office. The congregation says that by 2022 it had become clear that maintaining its church on Mountain Street would soon be beyond its means; in 2023 it decided to carry on as a congregation but sell the property, and the church and manse were sold on 25 June 2024. The Mountain Street building was bought by Living Light Canadian Reformed Church.

The congregation counts its presence in Grimsby from 1832. The Town’s heritage records say its first church, built of brick on Main Street West in 1837, was believed to be one of the earliest brick churches in Ontario and stood on the site of today’s Trinity United Church, where it was replaced in 1889 by a larger church named St. John’s. After church union in 1925 created Trinity United Church, 92 members who chose to remain Presbyterian built a new home for St. John’s at 10 Mountain Street in 1928, using Grimsby sandstone quarried by members of the congregation; the Town designated it a heritage property in September 2025. In moving into Trinity’s building, the congregation has returned to the site of its first church.

St. John’s belongs to the Presbyterian Church in Canada through the Presbytery of Hamilton and the Synod of Southwestern Ontario. Rev. Kyle Dore is lead and family minister and Rev. Maria Lallouet is seniors ministry coordinator. A seniors’ group called Chair Chat meets on Friday mornings, and families gather one Sunday afternoon a month for a story, crafts, games and a meal.

What to expect

Services mix traditional hymns with contemporary worship music and include a children's time, an interactive Bible-based message and prayers for the community and the world. The church takes a come-as-you-are approach to dress. On Sunday mornings visitors can park in the upper lot near Memory Hall; parking is limited, so the church suggests coming early.
