Christ Our Saviour Lutheran Church

Christ Our Saviour is a congregation of Lutheran Church–Canada that holds the Bible to be the inspired Word of God and subscribes to the Book of Concord, the Lutheran confession of faith drawn from Holy Scripture. It believes that the Lord Jesus is present among his people through the preaching of his Word and the sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion, to forgive their sins, and that sinners are saved by grace through faith. It describes itself as biblical, confessional, liturgical and sacramental.

Christ Our Saviour Lutheran Church is on Main Street West. The congregation was formed by the merger of Messiah Lutheran Church in Stoney Creek and St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Grimsby, and has worshipped in Grimsby since 1994. It belongs to Lutheran Church–Canada, which places it in the Hamilton circuit of its East Region.

The Divine Service is held every Sunday at a quarter past eleven, following the liturgy and hymns of the Lutheran Service Book. Christ Our Saviour forms a dual parish with Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hamilton and shares its pastor: the Rev. Jason Gillard, who was born in Niagara-on-the-Lake, studied at university and seminary in St. Catharines, and has been pastor since 2023. His sermons are posted on the two congregations’ shared YouTube channel, and the church also keeps a community garden.

What to expect

The service and the hymns come from the Lutheran Service Book, and every service has two or three Scripture readings, which the pastor explains. Christ's body and blood are received at every Divine Service; the congregation practises closed communion, so only members of Lutheran Church–Canada receive communion at its altar. The church's word to visitors is to come as they are.
