St. Joseph Catholic Church
St. Joseph is a Roman Catholic parish of the Diocese of St. Catharines. Catholics confess the Nicene Creed, receive the seven sacraments, and hold that the bread and wine of the Mass become the body and blood of Christ. The parish's mission statement commits its members, as followers of Jesus Christ, to serving the Church, 'recognizing that our Church is a community of the People of God.'
St. Joseph is Grimsby’s Roman Catholic parish, worshipping at 135 Livingston Avenue in the Diocese of St. Catharines, whose directory gives 1866 as the year the parish was established. Fr. Rico Passero, ordained for the diocese in 2011, has been pastor since August 2015; the parish also lists an associate pastor, Fr. Ronnie Tagnines, and a sacramental minister, Fr. Bill Derousie. The parish lists four Catholic schools as its parish schools: Blessed Trinity Catholic Secondary and the St. John, Our Lady of Fatima and St. Joseph elementary schools.
Four Masses are said each weekend, the Saturday vigil at five and Sunday Masses at nine, half past ten and noon, each with its own style of music. Mass is also said at nine every morning from Monday to Saturday, and the parish livestreams its Masses daily on Facebook and YouTube. Confessions are heard on Saturday afternoons before the vigil.
What to expect
The parish describes each of its four weekend Masses by its music. The Saturday 5:00 p.m. vigil, led by an organist and cantor, is the most solemn and generally draws an older congregation; the 9:00 a.m. Sunday Mass is traditional, with organ and church choir; the 10:30 a.m. Mass is geared to young families, with a large choir, keyboard and guitar, a Children's Liturgy for ages seven to ten and a Little Spirits program for ages three to six, and is the best attended of the weekend; the noon Mass has a keyboard player and a small choir. Newcomers are invited to introduce themselves to the priests at the church door.
